Moxibustion is a therapy where the practitioner uses moxa wool to treat and prevent conditions.
The moxa is made from the leaves of Chinese mug wort, which feels warm and releases fragrance.
Moxibustion might warm the channels, invigorate the flow of qi and blood circulation, assist with the management and integrity of the immunity system.
Sydney Ming Yi Tang TCM Centre uses special moxa sticks that are infused with different Chinese herbs to enhance and provide a unique experience.
Moxibustion | How does it work?

The practitioner will hold the burning moxa stick close to the surface of the skin (without touching). The moxa material is compressed into a cigar-sized stick that is lit and allowed to smolder. It produces a very unique, penetrating heat.
The smoldering moxa stick is held over specific areas that often correspond with certain acupuncture points. The glowing end of the moxa stick is held about an inch or two above the surface of the skin until the area reddens and becomes suffused with warmth.
What do Moxibustion patients feel?
It is not uncommon for patients receiving moxibustion to report a sudden, intense warmth that quickly radiates along a specific pathway (usually corresponding with the jing luo channel that is being treated) when the moxa stick is applied. This is an expected good sign reflecting an increase in blood circulation and the flow of qi.
When is Moxibustion a good idea?

Usually used to target “cold” patterns, moxibustion may be able to help with:
- Pain relief and management due to injury or arthritis
- Management of digestive problems
- Management of irregular menstrual cycle
- Management of issues related to gynecological and obstetrical conditions
- As an adjuncnt treatment that may assist with IVF treatment
- Fatigue
Practitioners often complement acupuncture and moxibustion in the same session when considered appropriate. Practitioners believe such a combined programme would create synergy and may increase overall effectiveness when used together.
What do Moxa sticks smell like?
Moxa sticks tend to have a herbal scent. In consideration of our patience comfort, Ming Yi Tang uses smokeless moxa sticks.
